United Way Hosts Martin Luther King, Jr. Days Of Service Throughout Holiday Weekend

WHAT: Martin Luther King, Jr. Days of Service Projects, including:

“Create a Reading Room”
Friday, January 16, 2015 from 9 a.m. to Noon
Brookhurst Junior High School
601 North Brookhurst Street, Anaheim
Details: This project will transform an unused room on campus into a safe, comfortable area that will promote student literacy. Volunteers can help paint, move and assemble furniture, hang curtains, set up lighting, place books on shelves and other light tasks.

“Community Garden Groundbreaking”
Saturday, January 17 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
South Junior High School
2320 E. South Street, Anaheim
Details: This project will transform an unused, fallow school lot into an educational platform for biology, botany, horticulture, woodshop, healthy cooking classes and environmental education. Volunteers can help with construction activities (hammering, drilling), assembling planters, tilling dirt, lining pathways with weed barrier cloth, create and hang a weather-proof chalkboard, attach vertical growing racks, along with other activities.

“Point in Time Count”
Thursday, January 22 from 1 to 4 p.m.
211 at the Village
1505 E. 17th Street, Suite 108, Santa Ana
Details: Volunteers will help prepare for Orange County’s biennial homeless count by preparing and stocking deployment centers with maps and survey packets.

WHO: United Way staff, volunteers and partner organizations, including OneOC.

WHY: For the past 2 years, Orange County United Way has offered volunteer opportunities for community members who wish to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in partnership with OneOC. Activities address critical community issues in the areas of Education, Income, Health and Housing.
